“Pure mathematicians just love to try unsolved problems — they love a challenge.”

— Andrew Wiles

‘Mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.’

–Albert Einstein

Our vision for mathematics is for children to leave Abbey Hulton Primary as confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians; who understand that mathematics is a fundamental part of everyday life and the world we live in. Our children can appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics, and have a sense of curiosity about the subject. Mathematics is a core subject, therefore it is taught every day following a mastery approach.

At Abbey Hulton Primary School we believe that good mathematics teaching and learning happens when:

  • Children are engaged, excited and involved
  • Children can master the skills they are using, developing confidence and competence with numbers and the number system
  • Children have an enjoyment of mathematical learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion
  • Children develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts
  • Children confidently use mathematical vocabulary
  • Teachers are confident about what they are teaching and have high expectations of all children
  • Children understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life
  • Children talk, ask questions, share ideas and explain
